We are now feeling cooler breezes in the mornings here in the low country, as summer comes to an end.
Charleston and Georgetown counties allow continual access to the awesome waterways of the Atlantic Ocean via Myrtle, Litchfield, Pawleys & Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms, and Folly Beaches. We are also naturally blessed with the five rivers in Georgetown - the Waccamaw, Black, Sampit, North and South Santee Rivers, and in Charleston with the Stono, Ashley and Cooper Rivers. We have no choice, but to honor Yemaja and Oshun, here in our ancestral land.

I am honored to have the privilege of teaching and learning from young people residing in Charleston, Georgetown, and Horry counties. As a teaching artist, I am in constant awe and a perpetual life long learning process. The youth of today approach us baby boomers with such an incredible wealth of everything. They are wiser, on many levels, yet as the often quoted text says, weaker on many levels.

Parents, educators, and such often discuss what has happened to the joy of reading, writing, and conversation. We observe our youth having preference to text messages, rather than speaking directly to others. Will electronic e books spill over to the young techie buffs, who have become addicted to the electronic media screen?

I have noticed that as children approach the fourth grade, they tend to take less creative risks, and are much more concerned with what others think of their art works. My first and second graders, on the other hand, are awesomely unique in their creative approaches to the projects which we explore. I have worked in three schools over the last few years and made this observation. This is particular interesting, as one observes the degree of conformity which is encouraged during the early childhood years of pre school / child development and kindergarten grades. The next time that you visit the early childhood hall, please notice how every child is given a cookie cutter, look alike piece, and encouraged to make it look like every other child's.

As adults, we can encourage our children to make their art in whatever way they like, and do not try to follow someone else's response to the art assignment. We can also ask ourselves how we form our own definitions and opinions of what art is, and its value in our lives? How many of us have discouraged our children to explore art as a career because we believe that it is a starving field? These internal dialogs will directly impact on what messages we portray to our children about art.

We must encourage our children to create and show them the relationship between creativity and the enhancement of problem solving ability. True art is made by risk takers which speaks to our emotional sides by making us feel and drawing guttural response.

New Exhibit Highlights Treasured Lowcountry Craft

Charleston, SC — The Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture invites the public to “Sweetgrass: A Living Legacy of Family and Community”, a free exhibit showing from November 19, 2009 through May 15, 2010 at 125 Bull Street in Charleston, South Carolina. The exhibit’s opening reception is November 19, 2009 at 6pm in the McKinley Washington Auditorium.

This “Sweetgrass” exhibit is a culmination of over twenty-seven years of relationships between Avery and sweetgrass basket makers. Avery has purchased numerous baskets and has become dedicated to ensuring those in the Lowcountry and beyond recognize the wealth of history, knowledge, and culture this craft holds. The “Sweetgrass” exhibit will acknowledge the African-American heritage of the baskets and its makers, with a primary focus on how and why the baskets were used in the Lowcountry and the shift from utility to art.

Basket making is a skill passed down from generation to generation. Experienced basket makers invent forms, experiment with new materials and styles, and perfect the techniques taught to them by parents and grandparents. The Avery Research Center’s Summer History Camp and Next Generation Project seek to expand knowledge of this skill to the community, offering lessons by renowned basket maker Henrietta Snype to Charleston-area children.

The “Sweetgrass” exhibit will take visitors through the history of the skill and the people who performed it up to present day. The baskets, photographs, and artwork are from the Avery Research Center collection. Baskets created during the Summer History Camp and Next Generation Project will also be included.

The Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture collects, preserves, and makes public the unique historical and cultural heritage of African Americans in the Lowcountry and across South Carolina. Andria Lynette Hall Sizemore (1957 - 2009)

Born in Henderson, North Carolina on April 26, 1957, Andria Lynette Hall Sizemore,
an Emmy award-winning journalist and Christian communications strategist, was
called home to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on Monday, January 12, 2009 after
a courageous battle with breast cancer.

At the age of four, Andria and her family moved to "Preachers Row" in
Crown Heights, Brooklyn, New York where she learned early about motivation
as a preacher and teacher's kid. She was after all, a child of the Civil Rights Movement.

Her mother is a retired New Jersey counselor and educator, while her father, who
worked closely with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., served as pastor of the same
church for more than 40 years.

A career broadcaster, Andria inherited the traits of teaching, counseling and
inspiring others with the Word of God because of her faith foundation.

Delightful, insightful, articulate, passionate, energetic, faithful and forgiving describe
this "southern girl with northern exposure." Andria eventually commanded
the news anchor desk of the world renowned CNN/USA in addition to working
in the nation's number one market at the number one station in New York City -
New York's NBC affiliate. She has been a national news correspondent with FOX
Network and her work earned the industry's prestigious Gabriel and Dupont Awards
while working in Boston, Massachusetts.

"Marrying the Camera with the Cross," Andria excelled as President of
SpeakEasy M.E.D.I.A., Inc. - a media and public-presentation consulting firm,
based in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. She Ministered, Edified and Divinely Inspired All ...
to the glory of God, leaving a rich legacy - her love for the Lord and His people,
an inspiring spirit of excellence, and dedication to service.

Andria provided media and communications coaching to two leaders in the
Jamaican government; a candidate who was in the running to lead the
World Health Organization; and the executive staff of Half Moon resort,
a luxury property in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Her company produced life-changing women's conferences in the Caribbean,
promoting faith tourism. Andria was well loved and respected throughout
the Caribbean community at home and abroad and played a key production
role in numerous editions of Counterpart International's Caribbean Media
Exchange on Sustainable Tourism (CMEx). CMEx is designed to improve
the quality of media coverage of sustainable tourism in the Caribbean.

Andria authored three books, This Far by Faith: How to Put God
First in Everyday Living; The Walk at Work: Seven Steps to Spiritual Success
on the Job (Random House); and The Walk to Wealth: Seven Guiding Principles
to Prosperity (SpeakEasy MEDIA Publishing).

She also was a Director with YTB Travel International, an Illinois-based
online travel company; and a Board Director of Counterpart Caribbean, a sustainable development organization, based in Barbados.

Andria worked passionately as Executive Producer, Creator and Host
of the radio programs, Andria Hall PROFILES! - The Walk As A Woman,
and The Walk at Work: Committed to Your Calling and Your Career.
Her radio broadcasts have been heard throughout the United States
on The Sheridan Gospel Network, WBLS in New York, and WMCA and
Salem Communications in New Jersey. Today, she can still be seen on
www.faithstreams.com as host of America at Worship, which formerly
aired on the Hallmark Channel.

Andria held an Honorary Doctorate in Humane Letters from
Virginia University of Lynchburg, and has been featured in
The Washington Post, Essence, Ebony, Jet, Precious Times,
and many other newspapers and publications across the country
and the world. A former columnist for Gospel Today magazine,
Andria also played a supporting role in the movie "The Good Son."

In addition to winning the prestigious Emmy Award for Hosting,
she has garnered numerous journalism awards. Andria was respected
as a "faith and work" expert, showing that the two need not be separated
but rather, when faith is lived out in one's everyday vocation, true success
is achieved. Andria and her husband, Clayton Sizemore
(CNN's Manager of Operations), made their home in New Jersey.

She was predeceased by her grandparents, Evelyn and Walter Sellars,
and Aurelia and Grant Hall. Celebrating her life, she leaves her mother
Mabel Hall, father Reverend Willie J. Hall, husband Clayton Sizemore,
three children Amber, Cameron and Chase, sister Akosua Yeboah,
aunts Marjorie (Matthew) Carden, Catherine Eason and Geraldine Young,
and a large group of devoted relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, January 16, 2009
at Bethel Baptist Church in Brooklyn, New York
(265 Bergen Street, NY 11217) from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.,
while her viewing and celebration is scheduled for
First Baptist Church of Lincoln Gardens in Somerset, New Jersey
(771 Somerset Street, NJ 08873) on Saturday, January 17, 2009
starting at 8 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked well-wishers to make contributions
to the SpeakEasy M.E.D.I.A. Foundation which Andria established to minister,
mentor and mold the future generations.

Zora Neal Hurston (January 7, 1891 - January 28, 1960) was born in Alabama. Her family moved to the United State's first all Black incorporated township of Eatonville, Florida, when she was just a toddler. She published four novels, two books of folklore, an autobiography, many short stories, and several articles and plays over a 30 year career span. She attended Howard University and Barnard College, where she became recognized as America's first Black female Anthropologist.

Eartha Kitt (January 17, 1927 - December 25, 2008) was born in North, South Carolina. An actress, songstress, dancer; she stated that she owed her longevity to growing her own food and raising her own chickens, even when she lived in Los Angeles, CA.
